Jay Gabler

Jay Gabler (jay [at] tcdailyplanet [dot] net) is associate editor and arts editor at the Twin Cities Daily Planet.

He grew up in Duluth and St. Paul, where he graduated from Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School and St. Agnes High School. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree in education from Boston University and graduate degrees in sociology and education from Harvard University. With colleagues, he has published several academic research articles and a book, Reconstructing the University (co-authored with David John Frank, Stanford University Press, 2006). He is also the author of Sociology for Dummies (Wiley, 2010) and a revised edition of the Insiders' Guide to the Twin Cities (Globe Pequot Press, 2010); and co-editor, with Becky Lang, of the short story collection Future Cities (Bascom Hill, 2013). Additionally, he teaches media and cultural studies at Macalester College.

He now lives in the Lyndale neighborhood of Minneapolis. He is a co-founder and co-editor of The Tangential, a creative writing blog. He also writes the hyperfiction blog Unreality House and writes about guilty-pleasure pop songs for Portable. He contributes art criticism to Artforum.com, and in 2013, he is serving as visiting critic in the Jerome Foundation Fellowship program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

He made his debut as a playwright with Ivory Tower Burning in the 2012 Minnesota Fringe Festival. An avid biker, he serves on the board of the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition.
