About me

Jay Gabler (jay [at] tcdailyplanet [dot] net) is associate editor and arts editor at the Twin Cities Daily Planet.

He grew up in Duluth and St. Paul, where he graduated from Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School and St. Agnes High School. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree in education from Boston University and graduate degrees in sociology and education from Harvard University. With colleagues, he has published several academic research articles and a book, Reconstructing the University (co-authored with David John Frank, Stanford University Press, 2006). He is also the author of Sociology for Dummies (Wiley, 2010) and a revised edition of the Insiders' Guide to the Twin Cities (Globe Pequot Press, 2010); and co-editor, with Becky Lang, of the short story collection Future Cities (Bascom Hill, 2013). He has taught sociology and cultural studies at Harvard, Macalester College, and Rasmussen College.

He now lives in the Lowry Hill East neighborhood of Minneapolis. He is a co-founder and co-editor of The Tangential, a creative writing blog. He also edits the hyperfiction blog Unreality House and contributes to Artforum.com and Vita.mn; in 2013, he is serving as visiting critic in the Jerome Foundation Fellowship program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

He made his debut as a playwright with Ivory Tower Burning in the 2012 Minnesota Fringe Festival. An avid biker, he serves on the board of the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition. He also serves on the art advisory panel of Obsidian Arts.
