Mortgage banking double-cross leaves some homeowners out in the cold

Homeowner Caylin Crawford had been paying the mortgage on her St. Paul home on time since she bought it in the spring of 2009. Then, in January 2011, she had a snowboarding accident. Told that she would be unable to work for the next three months, she called US Bank, her mortgage servicer, to see if they could make adjustments until she was back on her feet.

New ownership comes to troubled Minneapolis apartments

CNO door-knocked the Zorbalas apartments in late 2012.

The community's struggle with notorious landlord Spiros Zorbalas appears to have reached an important milestone. Recent work by the Minneapolis City Council, the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization (CNO), and other agencies have drawn attention to the squalid living conditions and abusive management in Zorbalas' buildings. In March 2012, the Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld the Minneapolis City Council's action to revoke or nullify the rental license at all 38 Minneapolis apartment buildings owned by Zorbalas, including six buildings comprising 80 apartment units in the Corcoran neighborhood. According to the StarTribune, Zorbalas recently sold all 38 buildings to Minneapolis landlord Steve Frenz, who has begun making repairs to the buildings.

Not yet a post-racial Minnesota

While we can celebrate all of the progress our country has made since the civil rights era, we must also acknowledge the work left to be done. Minnesotans are used to ranking near the top on many measures of livability, health, and education. Unfortunately, our racial gaps show that Minnesota's success does not benefit everyone equally.
