House committee takes action to improve property tax refunds, aids to local governments

Efforts to ensure that Minnesotans don’t pay too high a share of their incomes in property taxes took another step forward this week as the House Property and Local Tax Division passed its Division Report. The report was authored by Representative Jim Davnie and amended on to House File 2.

807 Broadway Task Force asks Minneapolis residents: What matters most?

Twenty-seven neighbors and 33 non-neighborhood people filled out two-page two-columned comment forms after seven developers made 10-minute pitches to a meeting moderated by the 807 Broadway Task Force. The Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education may hear a recommendation from district staff April 23 or into May, on which developer should buy and renovate its former headquarters.

Property tax relief nearly overshadowed by new 'sand tax'

Staying true to their word that property tax relief would be among the session’s top priorities, the DFL majority has laid out a plan that would have more homeowners qualifying for a property tax refund. However, a proposed tax expansion on the state’s budding frac sand mining operations — contained in the same bill — pushed tax relief to the sidelines during testimony.

Shiloh Temple opens doors to homeless families in North Minneapolis

Blow-up mattresses and baby cribs might not seem like church supplies, but they're part of the mission for Shiloh Temple International Ministries, located at West Broadway and Fremont Avenue in North Minneapolis. Shiloh Temple is one of 43 congregations that take turns hosting homeless families on a one to two week rotation at least once a year. Churches provide sleeping quarters in Sunday School classrooms and other open spaces, with volunteers sharing room set up, shopping and food prep. Some volunteers even stay at the site location overnight with guests.

Open Saint Paul: What is your vision for the future of the West Side Flats?

The City of Saint Paul Department of Planning and Economic Development (PED) has begun a community-based planning process to update the West Side Flats Master Plan and Development Guidelines, adopted in 2001. The Planning Commission created a community task force, chaired by a Planning Commissioner, to advise City staff and consultants during the planning process. In addition, a series of community meetings will be held to get input from the broader public.

Sale of 1522 Hillside a "no-brainer," new avenues for rehabbing historic homes in Minneapolis to be rolled out

Last week the sale of 1522 Hillside Avenue North cleared one of the final hurdles before Nicole Curtis can begin restoration of this historic property. Council member Goodman called the sale a "no-brainer," and initiated a 20-minute discussion about how to preserve more houses and engage the private market in a better way. The motion for 1522 carried unanimously, but the preceding discussion marked what could be a sea change in city disposition of boarded and vacant properties.
