An entity calling itself “Classical Mechanics” produces this show, but it’s really Midwest Youth Dance Theatre from Roseville, MN, a close-in suburb of Saint Paul. MYDT is a studio/school with a long and honorable history.
In comes Sara Stevenson Scrimshaw. Tawny and glorious Sara. She is long of limb, impeccable of line, clean of technique, and masterful of presence. She delivers a solo that includes a surprise or two and the consumption of what is reputed to be high class whiskey.
Kelly Radermacher hails now from Milwaukee but she spent seven or eight years in the Twin Cities before going east a couple of years ago. She danced here with a number of people, but especially Denise Armsted and April Sellers.
This show – mostly dance but a certain amount of text and song – is a loose collaboration among four women who have something to say. It holds together remarkably well, despite lack of a clear and tangible underlying thread such as narrative or topic or style. The four separate pieces are all clearly distinct from each other, but somehow they belong together.
Last night I was sitting backstage at The Lab Theatre waiting for my next cue. There’s an area at the foot of the stairs that extends under what is a sort of side-view balcony, and also the tech booth, above. That’s where I was.
“Dance With The Divas!” is at The Lab Theatre. There are still three shows: tonight (Weds) at 7:00, plus slots on Saturday and Sunday. I saw it a couple of days ago.
Full disclosure; I have a small part in Sarah LaRose-Hollands’s Fringe show, “Soiree Preview.” I want to talk abut being a person in someone else’s show. I will carefully avoid any critical, analytical or perceptual comments about this show. I’m prohibited, in fact, from commenting on this show on the Fringe website.
