With this comic love story about men facing old age. Czech literature teacher Josef Tkaloun (Zderěk Svěrák who is past retirement age, realizes one day that he no longer understands his pupils, and so he quits…dramatically.

Isolated in his city flat with only wife Eliska for company and unsure about how to deal with this new situation, he accepts a position at a refundable bottles counter in the local supermarket as his solution to a decent job, solving what had been the root of his unhappiness. At the center of a city community again, Josef finally finds his way back to his own life. The father-and-son team that made Oscar-winning Kolya such a delight are back in tandem again, Jan Sverák behind the camera and Sverák Sr. as scriptwriter and lead actor. Mama Svěrák also comes in as part of supporting cast.

This was a sweet, funny,

This was a sweet, funny, touching movie. The characters were complex, real and winning, and the photography was gorgeous. I loved everything about it.

"EMPTIES" LEAVES YOU FULL

This lovely, quiet, achingly human—and ultimately hopeful film begins forlornly. But the patient director and his truly wonderful cast of actors take us on a journey we all must attempt no matter what our age. The 60-ish hero refuses to be invisible, cast-aside, useless. His wife refuses to be ignored. His daughter refuses to be unloved. His young male cohorts from school and grocery store refuse to give up on women. In the end, EMPTIES is full of life and hope for all of us.

Bets movie at the fest so far

A touching movie about a man not ready to give up his youth or his life. If only all our spirits were so compelling.
