TCDP TOP PICK | Xavier Tavera: "Calle Lake" at Augsburg College
TCDP TOP PICK: You've seen Lake Street, but you've never seen it through the eyes of Xavier Tavera, whose complex portraits of members of the local Latino community are on display at Augsburg College until March 14. - Jay Gabler |
Tavera’s recent photographic portrait series documents members of the Latino community on Lake Street in Minneapolis.
After moving from Mexico City to the United States, Xavier Tavera learned what it felt like to be part of a subculture – the immigrant community. Subjection to alienation has transformed the focus of his photos to sharing the lives of those who are marginalized. Images have offered insight into the diversity of numerous communities and given a voice to those who are often invisible. Tavera has shown his work extensively in the Twin Cities, nationally and internationally including Chile and China. His work is part of the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Plains Art Museum and Weisman Art Museum. He is a recipient of the McKnight Fellowship, Jerome Travel Award, State Arts Board, and Bronica Scholarship.
Works of art are continually on view at Augsburg. Our various exhibition spaces-The Gage Family Art Gallery, the Christensen Center Art Gallery, and the Student Art Gallery-enable us to present work by students, faculty, alumni, as well as that of contemporary artists from around Minnesota and throughout the world.
The mission of the Augsburg Art Galleries is to contribute to the cultural climate of the Twin Cities and the Augsburg campus. The galleries, through their ongoing exhibitions, complement the educational goals of the Augsburg College Art Department and provide a forum for the evolving discussions of historic and contemporary art, design, and culture.
As one of the College’s most public components, the Art Galleries also recognize the responsibility to attract, welcome, and serve the community, and to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to artistic excellence.
The Christensen Center Gallery, which replaced the earlier “Alumni Gallery,” opened in fall 2002 as one of the highlights of the newly renovated Christensen Center. Also designed by BWBR of St. Paul, the gently curving gallery with its 45-foot long floor-to-ceiling glass wall is immediately visible when entering this busy student center.
