What Remains... Exhibition at the Phipps Center for the Arts
Mixed Media Sculpture by Denise Rouleau and Mark D. Roberts
Whether or not their preservation occurred through an extraordinary set of natural circumstances or in accordance to some ancient rite, we view mummies in a curious way. They are repugnant and at the same time captivating. We are in awe of them, but perhaps do not envy them. We want to uncover their secrets, but as we search for answers among the bones and artifacts we have to ask ourselves who we are and how will we be remembered.
Location: Phipps Center for the Arts, Gallery 1 : Locust St., Hudson, WI, 54016
Exhibition runs: February 15 – March 17, 2013
Opening Reception: Friday, February 15, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
This body of work is part of an ongoing collaborative series originally titled “Art of the Catacomb.” The framework for the catacombs consists mainly of re-purposed vintage objects that house the mummy-like figures. The figures are sculpted in low-fire clay and in most case are washed with multiple layers of paint and distressed so they appear to have been recently unearthed.
In response to what is the meaning behind the work, it is best described as a collection of stories that prompt questions about life, death, and human nature. Within any theme we want the figures to maintain a sense of ambiguity and detachment from any fixed identity; our fascination with mummies derives from in part the sense of a mystery to unravel. Ultimately we hope our catacombs invite others to wonder and invent their own narratives…in what remains.
