Hardcover Theater presents Pollyanna, a defiantly uncool adaptation of the 1913 novel by Eleanor H. Porter.

We know the book has a horrible reputation. People think the story is sentimental garbage. They think the lead character probably deserves to be strangled.
That’s what Steve Schroer, adapter/director, thought. In fact, his initial idea was to change the ending, and have the whole town rise up and lynch Pollyanna for the crime of being insufferably upbeat. He pictured her hanging from a tree limb, twisting in the breeze, while the townspeople cheer.

Then Steve read the book, and…it won him over. At this point he would give his life to protect that little girl.

So we’re doing it straight. That doesn’t mean it will be drab, dusty realism. This isn't going to be the Disney movie onstage. (The movie changed the story quite a bit.) The show will be theatrical, energetic, and fun, with a lot more comedy than you might expect.

And we promise it won’t be gooey and sentimental. But it IS a story about goodness. Do you believe in goodness? Is it possible not to be ironic about it?
