TCDP TOP PICK: At the Daily Planet, we typically steer you toward under-the-radar productions that you're less likely to hear about elsewhere...but this holiday season, it's only fair to take a moment to give thanks for the Guthrie Theater, behemoth of the local arts scene. Tyrone Guthrie chose Minnesota for his pioneering regional theater because he appreciated our deep value for the arts and a local business community willing to lend its support. 50 years later, that's still true, and the Guthrie has helped raise our local theater scene to one of international note. Even if you never set foot inside the Guthrie, you benefit from the fact that the Guthrie helps sustain the livelihoods of dozens of top theater professionals who then have time to pursue their passion projects—here.

Even A Christmas Carol, the least interesting show to see at the Guthrie in any given year, is staged with imagination and integrity. Unless you're completely burnt out on Dickens—in other words, unless you're completely burnt out on life—you'll find a lot to enjoy in the Guthrie's traditional, classy production. A miserly and miserable man, Ebenezer Scrooge (played by J.C. Cutler for the second year) greets each Christmas with a “bah humbug,” until he is visited one Christmas Eve by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future. Through a restless night, the spirits show him happy memories from his past, cruel realities from the present and the grim future should he continue his cantankerous ways.

With a new adaptation by Crispin Whittell, directed by Joe Chvala, Scrooge’s story of redemption remains as powerful and uplifting as it ever was. Don’t miss your chance to share this perennial holiday favorite—now in its 38th year—with your whole family. It’s an experience they will treasure for years to come.
