TCDP TOP PICK | Papa John Kolstad & the Hot Club of East Lake Street

04/06/2013 - 8:30am - 04/07/2013 - 12:30pm

TCDP TOP PICK: For a low-key but highly enjoyable evening, it’s hard to beat Papa John Kolstad at the family-friendly and TV-less Merlins Rest, 3601 East Lake Street. Waaay back in the day, Papa John was a founding member of legendary Sorry Muthas. He later appeared as a regular on Prairie Home Companion, and now runs Mill City Music while playing out and about, and occasionally running for office as an independent or Green candidate. Tonight, the the Hot Club will consist of the underrated Dean “Many Fingers” Mikkelson on guitar, Sam Fiske on trumpet, and Andrew Bergmann on bass. Expect acoustic swing, jazz standards, and blues, served with sly observations and zest. Be sure to bring an ID if you want an adult beverage. - Larry Englund
