TCDP TOP PICK: As a Grammy-winning tenor saxophonist with a big sound, Kirk Whalum has been highly successful in synthesizing gospel, R&B, and contemporary jazz. He synthesizes those interests as well, as an ordained minister and Chief Creative Officer of the STAX Music Academy and the STAX Museum in his hometown of Memphis. Whalum first played in his father’s church choir and continues to bring a spiritual dimension to his recordings. He has recorded a 3-CD series called the Gospel According to Jazz, portions of which he’ll be performing on February 8 at the Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church.
