Hands On: People at Work Art Exhibit

Beginning on Labor Day, Water and Oil Art Gallery will host the exhibit “Hands On: People at Work.” Selected works will offer tribute to the sweat equity earned through hard work, artisanship and craftsmanship. Featured artist Judy Westergard will be displaying her series “A Show of Hands—Hands as Portraiture.” Evocative of their owners’ personal narratives, Westergard describes the inspiration that led to these works:
“I grew up in historic northeast Minneapolis in a blue-collar environment. I studied my mom’s hands as she hung clothes and rolled dough for pierogi.

Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota’s WALK FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILY FUN DAY presented by Wells Fargo will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the St. Paul Saints Midway Stadium beginning at 8:30 a.m. Inflatable games and bouncing houses, face painting, sports clinics, kid’s dash, classic car show, tailgating party, free parking, food, entertainment, 1.5 mile walk, celebrities, and much more will be enjoyed. Spend this September 13th the old fashioned way – sharing a day of fun in the sun with family and friends for a great cause. And don’t forget to bring your walking shoes!
Tour de Chaska: Sierra Club's 13th Annual Tour de Sprawl

Don’t miss this year’s 13th Annual Tour de Sprawl – a fun and unique bicycle ride of about 20 miles, starting and ending this year at Fireman’s Park in Chaska. Explore first hand the history, bike trails and new developments of Chaska, named “8th Best Small Town in America” by Money Magazine. Expect good food, great speakers, mechanical support, post-ride music and lots of fun! Other tour highlights include a stop at an extremely rare type of wetland called Seminary Fen and a visit to 1970s planned community called Jonathon.
Oktoberfest on the riverfront
If you want to get the jump on Oktoberfest, Minneapolis offers Oktoberfest on the riverfront at St. Anthony Main, featuring traditional German food presented by Kramarczuk’s Eastern European Deli and the Black Forest Inn, as well as a variety of German beers and wines. Friday, Sept. 12, 4–9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 13, 10 a.m.–9 p.m.

Using What You Got: Interactive Performance Storytelling

Using What You Got: Interactive Performance Storytelling is a 3-week workshop that will teach participants a new way to see and hear story and how to use empathy as a tool in the creation of their work. Participants will learn how to use theater games and improv to create text and movement for their performance, and to consider how they engage the audience in their work and consider them as participants in the process.
Police Tactics During the RNC

A panel forum sponsored by the North East Suburban Greens regarding the police tactics during the RNC in the Twin Cities will be held on September 23, 2008, beginning at 7:30 PM at the Walker Church in Mpls. The presenters on the panel are people directly involved in the peace marches and who had direct contact with the police during that time.

Dave Bicking is a member of the Civilian Police Review Board of Minneapolis. He is a former and future Green Party candidate for Minneapolis City Council, representing Ward 9 in south Minneapolis.
