Traveling to the Navel of the World
Hostelling International Presents Free Travel Program in St. Paul; Open to Public

Easter Island, located 2,237 miles west of Chile in the vast Pacific Ocean, has been called the “navel of the world.” Partly because of its longtime isolation from the rest of humanity and partly because of the unique stone carvings that cover the landscape, Rapa Nui, as Easter Island is known in the islanders’ native language, has mystified outsiders for centuries. Even now, one must carefully consider whether the trip is worth the time and expense it takes to get there. The Minnesota Council of Hostelling International will focus on Rapa Nui as the topic of its June Travelers Circle on Thursday, June 19, 2008.

The Travelers Circle is a free program and discussion, open to the public. It’s at 7:00-8:30 p.m., at the Hostelling International Minnesota Council office, 622 Selby Avenue, St. Paul (above the Mississippi Market Co-op at Selby & Dale).

The discussion will be led by Minnesotans Maggie and Steve Blehert, who traveled to Rapa Nui in early 2008 (this was Steve’s second time visiting). For one week, they sought to do the only logical thing for travelers to Rapa Nui: spend as much time exploring the island as possible.

Some of the topics they’ll discuss in the June Travelers Circle are:
• How Easter Island has rapidly changed in the past several decades, and what it means for residents and visitors alike
• Treading lightly on this fragile island; ecologically and culturally
• Where are all the tourists? It feels like you have the whole place to yourself
• The major must-see historic sites of the island, along with practical information on where to stay and what to bring (or not to bring)

About Travelers Circles: These lively events are held every third Thursday of the month and focus on a different destination or travel topic each time. They are free, open to the public and discussion is encouraged!

About HI-Minnesota: The Minnesota Council of Hostelling International USA is a 501©(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting international travel and cultural exchange. Our mission is “to develop culturally sensitive world citizens through educational programs, promotion of responsible travel, and positive hostelling experiences.”

Advise and Dissent: Bethany Gustafson

What would you like to tell president-elect Barack Obama? Advise and Dissent features Minnesota opinions on what the new president should be thinking and doing.

Mr. President-elect, because you were elected on the hope for change, I ask you to seek advice from a wide variety of people, to look to people who have experience as well as to new voices outside of Washington and outside of the corporate establishment. MORE »

THEATER | "White Sheep of the Family," a sharp farce at Theatre in the Round

You’re not going to find a stronger theater company in the Twin Cities than the Theatre in the Round Players, and they’ve done it again, mounting yet anotther first-rate production. The White Sheep of the Family, by L. du Garde Peach and Ian Hay, is a splendidly written, sharply directed, beautifully acted farce you’re going to rush home and tell family, friends—pretty much anyone who’ll listen—all about.
