Travel Event - Mount Kilimanjaro

Date:
Nov 15 2007 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Event Description:

Hostelling International-Minnesota Presents:
To the Roof of Africa:
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!
Free Monthly Travel Program Open to Public

Come learn about what it takes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro from two folks who can proudly count themselves among the few who’ve seen its famed snow up close. Join Hostelling International-Minnesota for its November Travelers Circle. The Travelers Circle is a free program and discussion, open to the public. It’s taking place Thursday, November 15, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Hostelling International Minnesota Council office, 622 Selby Avenue, St. Paul (above the Mississippi Market Co-op at Selby & Dale).

To scale Mount Kilimanjaro is a feat of endurance. It is, after all, the highest peak in Africa. It has captured the imagination of an increasing number of travelers, especially in light of its shrinking snowfield. To ascend it takes stamina, courage, patience…and a little luck in tolerating the high altitude won’t hurt either. While its trekkers stand on their own two feet, they also rely on the strength of others and the assistance of Kili’s revered porters.

The featured speakers took different routes from the other: the Marangu route and the Umbwe route (which meets up with the Machame route). Come hear their stories and see a great slide show on African mountain climbing culture.

At his day job, Solberg is an award-winning potter with a national reputation and works displayed in the permanent collections of museums from the Twin Cities to San Francisco.
