Design and style

Ari Seth Cohen's blog Advanced Style proves that fashion is not just a young person's game

Fashion has always been pushed as a younger person’s game. Over the years it has been tailored to young women’s bodies with low body fat, perky body parts, and the naivete that comes with youth.

The sexiest jeans-wearing rockers in dirty denim history

Last week, I was driving around, listening to The Current, and Neil Diamond’s “Forever in Blue Jeans” came on as their No Apologies track. And it’s true, no one should ever apologize for loving Neil Diamond (or his Kansas City-based black impersonator, The Black Diamond). And as Neil crooned through my car speakers, I was reminded of another great musical moment. In the ’90s classic Clueless, the protagonist, Cher, laments the current stylings of America’s male youth. As she shares her disappointment over the state of young men’s fashion, a tribe of skaters in over-sized jeans, backwards baseball caps and flannel shirts walk in slow motion as World Party’s cover of David Bowie’s “All the Young Dudes” plays.

Music festival fashion: How to look fresh and be practical at the same time

It can be tough to dress well for summer, especially with the oppressive heat we’ve been experiencing in the Twin Cities. When it’s so warm out, the need for comfort often trumps style.

SATURDAY PICK | Art by architects at the 801 Gallery

Courtesy 801 Lofts

Architecture is, of course, an art—but sometimes architects like to try their hand at artworks that don't need to be load-tested. Jan Elftmann, best known as the Twin Cities' art car queen (that's her you've seen waving from the back of her Cork Truck), is curating a show at the 801 Gallery featuring work by 801 Lofts architect Garth Rockcastle as well as architects Peter Brown and Mark Kritz. Also exhibiting work in the show will be Aldo Moroni, Keith Holmes, and Laura Migliorino—a photographer who was hired by Rockcastle 10 years ago to photograph the building, and will be showing her images from that shoot.

THURSDAY PICK | Get "Urbanized" on the Midtown Greenway

If we can have site-specific theater (and boy, do we ever), why can't we have site-specific film screenings? That's what's going on August 9, as AIGA Minnesota presents a free screening of the documentary Urbanized by Gary Hustwit (Helvetica). The screening will be projected on the Midtown Exchange Building, so you can bike up the Greenway to get there, then enjoy a no-waste picnic while you meet your neighbors and discuss the issues raised by the provocative film about the issues raised by our evolving urban life.
