  1. Lao silk weaving is a unique skill in the United States, but in Laos nearly every woman is an “expert” silk weaver. (The Art is setting up the pattern and the loom; once you’re weaving the loom makes the art for you). Most the older Lao-American women could weave silk too if they had the equipment, time, and money. Perhaps we should give prestigious fellowships to every Lao woman who would love to continue her weaving but can’t because instead she has to work to make a living. The real award goes to the millions of women in Laos who produce fine silk weaving because if they don’t they would starve to death. They are the true artists who carry on the legacy of traditional Lao fabric.
