We had intended to distribute this open letter outside a fundraiser for Congressman Ellison.
A day before the event, we sent a copy of the letter to the Congressman and to the fundraiser host and told them of our intent. Both of them thought the planned action was very disrespectful, although we didn't see it that way.
The Congressman requested a meeting with us before the fundraiser. Four of the letter signers did meet with him, and Cong. Ellison's response exceeded our wildest expectations. His willingness to get involved on the issue of accountability for U.S.-committed torture was totally different from our past experiences with his office, as described in the letter.
August 1 is the 10th anniversary of the "torture memos" -- with not a single person who authorized or committed torture in the name of our country yet charged with violating the Federal Torture Statute -- so we and the Congressman intend to hold each other to the commitments made in our meeting.
Community Voices is a space for reader contributions—including news articles, opinion essays, and personal stories—moderated, but not edited, by Daily Planet staff. We invite you to post stories, send us stories, or suggest stories for inclusion in Community Voices. The opinions expressed by Community Voices contributors are their own and not necessarily the opinion of the TC Daily Planet.
