Re-use of the day: Alec Soth's art crate becomes Aunt Betsy's patio table

My aunt Betsy Gabler—a regular Daily Planet contributor—worked for a time at Alchemy Architects, a firm sharing a St. Anthony Park building with the studio of well-known photographer Alec Soth. Soth's work is shown around the world, and his prints would return to the studio in wooden art-shipping crates. Betsy remembers that Alchemy principal Geoff Warner, a re-use advocate, would say, "Don't throw away those crates!"MORE »

And the band plays on . . . St. Anthony Park Community Band marks 30 years

How many community organizations have you belonged to for 30 years? Although people tend to stay involved for long periods of time in the Bugle communities, a 30-year commitment is somewhat out of the ordinary. For Paul Husby and several others, the St. Anthony Park Community Band has been a part of their lives for three decades—since the band officially began in 1982.MORE »

SATURDAY PICK | Heiruspecs go back to school in a fundraiser for St. Paul's Central High

Central High School: catchy name, right? St. Paul's concrete bunker of a secondary school doesn't get the press that Perpich Arts High does, but Central has produced more than its share of the Twin Cities' top talents—from Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz to the hip-hop heroes who are Heiruspecs. For the third year running, on April 7 the band are headlining a benefit show for a scholarship fund supporting Central grads. The first two scholarship shows actually took place at Central, but this year the show migrates to the more party-friendly confines of the Turf Club. "Special guests" are promised, and this is one of those shows where they probably actually mean it.MORE »

Until recently, north and south St. Anthony Park shared everything—a name, two commercial districts, a couple of schools, similar political and demographic profiles and a comfortable relationship with long-term Minnesota District 66B State Rep. Alice Hausman.MORE »

THEATER | "T Bone N Weasel" by Theatre Pro Rata: It's like "Of Mice and Men," without all that pesky tragedy to bring you down

You wouldn't think that a story of two inept petty thieves cycling in and out of the prison system with no hope for a better future would be a ripe breeding ground for comedy, but that's Jon Klein's T Bone N Weasel for you. It finds comedy in racism, illiteracy, recidivism, homelessness, religion, bankruptcy, political opportunism, guns, mental illness, and prostitution, just to name a few. It's such an amusing, genial little travelogue, it's sort of like Of Mice and Men, without all that pesky tragedy to bring you down.MORE »
