Rash of street robberies in St. Paul

St. Paul police report a rash of armed robberies in the western district in the past two months. The robberies have some common elements: they take place at gunpoint, on the street, and after dark. Suspects are described as two or three young black men, one usually wearing a hoodie. Victims are usually young (21 and up). They have included three single male pedestrians, four male/female couples, and two groups of three. MORE »

Saintly cookies at the ball game

From Highland Little League to the Saints team, Pat Gavin and Brian Whinnery have been lifelong friends. Now they are playing on the same team, as partners in a chocolate chip cookie business. Last year Gavin, now an accountant, and St. Paul Saints pitcher Brian Whinnery started selling chocolate chip cookies at the concession stands at the Saint Paul Saints games at Midway Stadium. With the success of that first season behind them, the two are now going big time, continuing to sell at Saints games and taking their cookies to the Metrodome for selected Minnesota Twins and Vikings games and Gopher football games. Trader Joe's grocery store may open in St. Paul

A public hearing was held at the Ramsey County Courthouse to discuss a rezoning proposal to make way for a Trader Joe’s grocery store in St. Paul’s Highland Park neighborhood. St. Paul’s City Council postponed a key vote until Wednesday, Jan. 9th. The popular national grocery chain, known for off-beat marketing and select discount items wants to build a 14,000-square-foot store on the southeast corner of Lexington Parkway and Randolph Avenue just west of Interstate 35E. The popularity of its suburban sites has fostered concerns of heavy traffic in the area along with the uncertainty of what demolishing several homes would do to the neighborhood. The store needs at least five votes on the seven-member City Council for zoning approval that would allow the development in the largely residential neighborhood. MORE »
