TUESDAY PICK | TUES NGHT MUSC CLUB celebrates a year of good times with the Uptown vets

Photo courtesy TUES NGHT MUSC CLUB

If you go to Triple Double on Tuesdays to see the people your momma warned you about, then TUES NGHT MUSC CLUB (no typo) is where you go to meet the people you could bring home to her. If Dad's a vet, he might be on the scene already: the party's held at the Uptown VFW. Ringleader Matthew Jacobs takes a democratic approach: ordinary people can reserve shifts spinning physical records or virtual tracks while the friendly revelers shake their hips and toss back the free popcorn and coffee that sit conveniently within reach at the edge of the small dance floor. On May 29, TUES NGHT MUSC CLUB celebrates its one-year anniversary; get ready to sweat.

SATURDAY PICK | Serious fun at the Washburn A Mill Tour

Chances are you dig these cities we live in; and there's a lot to like too. The Mill City complex, situated in the scenic part of downtown, is definitely one reason, and is as historic as it is beautiful ... and also highly photographed. It's no coincidence that the old mill is situated on the Mississippi RIver—that river being the energy source that brought work and people up north to Minnesota. The Washburn A Mill Tour takes you on a guided walkabout of the building—the only opportunity of its kind, actually. I know it sounds like a glorified grade school field trip, but it's more than just a history lesson. I took my sister to "visit the most explosive museum in the world" last spring and we both still talk about how much random weird fun we had. When else are you going to get to take a picture with a giant box of Bisquick?

SUNDAY PICK | Folk Baroque: String fusion at the Baroque Room

I was nonplussed at the Portland Cello Project, but just to prove that I don't hate the entire concept of classical fusion, I'm going to go ahead and give a shout-out to Folk Baroque, an ensemble who explore the full range of the violin/fiddle repertoire. Folk and classical music have been elegantly wed many a time, from Dvořák's New World symphony to the stylings of Minnesota's own Orange Mighty Trio, and Folk Baroque's May 27 performance at the Baroque Room looks likely to please a varied crowd.

MONDAY PICK | Go see a summer blockbuster

Here at the Daily Planet we typically steer you towards independents and hyper-local events, but Memorial Day is here, summer is in full effect, and the time is ripe to shamelessly settle in for a big-budget blockbuster. I've recently reviewed three such films in the Daily Planet, and can guiltlessly send you to the multiplex.

FRIDAY PICK | Memory Lanes Block Party: Is there such a thing as too much rock?

Courtesy Memory Lanes

The Twin Cities' summer block party season gets fuller and fuller each year, and the Memory Lanes Block Party has firmly claimed pole position as the season opener. In the spirit of Prince's guitar solo on "Let's Go Crazy," the Memory Lanes fest leads with excess: this year, 30 artists play over the course of three days on three stages. Headliners include Needles (Friday), the Hood Internet (Saturday), and Los Straitjackets (Sunday). Bring open ears and an iron stomach: event sponsors include Jameson, Absolut, Summit, PBR, Malibu Rum, Red Bull, and—for the win—Hormel. Pink slime for everyone!

THURSDAY PICK | At RetroRama, the personal is political

Is there any key to the mysteries of history that's more accessible than fashion? Turn back the clock just ten years, and you can see yourself wearing something that you'd never wear today...but of course, everyone was wearing it back then. In the past. The past(s) is (are) where the Minnesota Historical Society makes its business to dwell, and each year the MHS celebrates fashions past with a "RetroRama" event featuring looks from a selected moment in time. This time around, though, the designers' mandate is thematic rather than periodic: the fashions on display will all be somehow related to politics. Also on tap are custom cocktails, music by the Southside Aces, and "Blingo" with Ellie Blades.

WEDNESDAY PICK | "House of Ghosts": Christopher Mihm's latest B movie

House of Ghosts is Chrisopher Mihm's seventh movie but first supernatural thriller (a "retro sci-fi horror film"). The Minneapolis filmmaker has got a significant following though—that much is apparent in the fact that the premiere at the Heights Theatre on Wednesday, May 23 has already sold out (a second showing is scheduled on June 7 at New Hope Cinema Grill). The movie trailer claims "It will literally frighten you to death!" I can pretty much tell you that's 100 percent not true. But the gimmicky nature of the trailer and Kickstarter fund in which this B movie is founded is very much the tribute to William Castle Mihm claims it to be.

TUESDAY PICK | AEthem Theatre Company realizes their "Before. After. Never."

Before. After. Never.'s Kickstarter video is a little, uh, offbeat. But it worked nevertheless, because AEthem Theatre Company now has itself a fully produced play showing at the Sabes Jewish Community Center on May 21 and 22. The premise of the show takes J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan one step further by looking at what happened after Neverland and describes itself as darker than Disney's version. The Twin Cities ensemble specializes in "physical theatre" and is made up on a group of Bethel University students wanting to develop "non-traditional skills." It seems the little company is succeeding in all of that so far.

MONDAY PICK | National Waiter/Waitress Day with Candacy Taylor

Working in the service industry, more often than not, comes with negative connotations and presumptions of class rank. That's no thanks to the media; take, for example, the movie Waitress starring Keri Russell or blog-turned-book Waiter Rant. In her book (a hybrid of photography and interviews) Counter Culture: The American Coffee Shop Waitress, Candacy Taylor refutes the stereotype of the age 50+ women waiting on tables in roadside diners, and helped Taylor to, "redefine my perspective on life, work, and happiness." On Monday, May 21, the final installment of this year's Friends of the St. Paul Public Library's "Untold Stories" labor history series will feature Taylor and her work on this project. Incidentally, the multi-media lecture is taking place on National Waiter/Waitress Day.

SATURDAY PICK | Live Action Set's "7-Shot Symphony," out on the range

"Is there something in the water down in Plainview? Seemingly against all odds, the farm town two hours southeast of the Twin Cities has hosted some of the area's very best original theater productions over the past two years." That's how I began my rave review of Jon Ferguson's 2011 show Pinocchio, staged at the Jon Hassler Theater. Currently playing at the theater is a sure bet: Live Action Set's Ivey-winning production The 7-Shot Symphony. It's an epic western told in the company's signature physical-theater style, and it would make for a fine day trip in this temperate late-spring weather. If you don't have your own wheels, or if you just want to make friends and save on gas, the company is facilitating carpools via its website.
