Former General Mills research and development complex becomes an arts haven on Hennepin

Charissa Peterson shapes a bulb of molten glass into a bowl Thursday at FOCI Minnesota Center for Glass Arts. FOCI, located in a building complex that used to be a General Mills research and development complex, is the only open studio for glass blowing in Minnesota where hobbyists can take classes and rent studio time. What happens when a corporate giant moves out of its giant, corporate space? Quite a bit in the case of General Mills leaving its research and development complex in Northeast Minneapolis.

WEDNESDAY PICK | Milo Greene headline at 7th Street Entry

When The Civil Wars came to the State Theatre last fall, they brought along Milo Greene to open. After their opening set, my friends and I pooled together $5 to purchase the group's four-song EP. I wasn't alone, as a barrage of TCW fans also pushed their way to the merch table to get their hands one of the limited copies. I think it's safe to say that Milo Greene cultivated their fan base on that tour. And I expect a lot of those fans to be back at 7th Entry to see them this time as headliners (with Family of the Year opening) on Wednesday, August 8. The ragtag group that makes up the enigmatic Milo Greene will be promoting their 36-minute, self-titled debut album. I'm hoping they'll do their cover of Sufjan Stevens' "Chicago" again as a filler.

MUSIC REVIEW | Luísa Maita at the Dakota Jazz Club: The new voice of Brazil

Luísa Maita, hailed by NPR as “The New Voice of Brazil,” kicked off her 2012 North American summer tour on Thursday, July 19 at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. This summer may be one of the hottest on record, but Maita and her band kicked it up to sultry that night. Perhaps that explains an overheard conversation that included this inspired quote: “I play this music for those who come to my bed.” Ahh, heat!

MUSIC REVIEW | Beirut chill out at Cabooze Outdoor Plaza

Ah, the sweet scent of sweaty scenesters in the summer. This—which is actually surprising to me—was my third time seeing Beirut in concert. I’m not a huge Beirut fan, but I always end up seeing them when they come to town. Now they’re neck-and-neck with Gardens & Villa for the title of most-frequently-seen-by-Lindsay-LaBarre. A very coveted position indeed. A first for me though was the venue. I’d never had the pleasure of seeing a band at the Cabooze Outdoor Plaza up until now, and I can say that I was overall pleased with the place. It didn’t strike me as specifically better or worse than any other venue that I’ve been to. One note though is that the bars on either side of the crowd don’t offer water cups and necessitate for the purchase of bottled water in order to stay hydrated. That’s all. Bring a water bottle if you see a show there. The crowd was mostly populated by young adults probably from around my age to the late 20s with a peppering of middle-aged people at the back of the crowd and various people from the ages in between. There were also, like, one or two kids there with a mom wearing a maxi dress and a dad wearing a Jason Mraz hat.
