TCDP TOP PICK: In Athens, Greece, circa 450 BCE, the blind poet Homer was bigger than the Beatles. His The Iliad and The Odyssey put him on the level of John, Paul, Luke, and Matthew in terms of laying the literary foundation of a civilization’s religious beliefs. Dramatizations of Homer’s work are always a challenge in the modern day and I can only imagine a theater approaching Homer with fear and trepidation. Director Benjamin McGovern rises to this challenge in the Guthrie Theater production of An Illiad. - read the complete review by Dan Reiva

Minnesota honors civil rights legend: Juanita Jackson Mitchell helped reestablish Twin Cities NAACP branches

Juanita Jackson Mitchell (1913-1992) only lived in St. Paul for four years, but her impact during that stint laid an eventual path to many firsts in Minnesota. The Juanita Jackson Mitchell Crusader for Freedom Exhibit, a compilation of Mitchell’s personal photographs and other artifacts, was on display at the State Capitol May 8-14.

MUSIC REVIEW | Brother Ali records the second episode of MN Original and TPT’s " The Lowertown Line"

Last night I attended the taping of MN Original and TPT’s new series The Lowertown Line, a program that features in-studio concerts and interviews with local musicians. Dessa is the host, although her portion of the program had been recorded earlier, so we didn’t see her last night. Last night’s featured artist was Brother Ali. Apparently tickets for the event were gone within half an hour. (Tickets were free and announced via MN Original’s Facebook page.)

TCDP TOP PICK | Goth Prom X: eXorcism

05/20/2013 - 9:00pm

TCDP TOP PICK: If goth culture can survive the Dark Shadows movie, it can survive anything. For a decade now, local goths have hosted a prom of their own, and the theme of this year's dark celebration is "eXorcism." It's free to enter—but once you're in, you may never leave. - Jay Gabler

TCDP TOP PICK | RAW: Natural Born Artists presents "Expressions" at the Fine Line Music Café

05/16/2013 - 8:00pm

TCDP TOP PICK: If it's the arts, you pretty much name it, RAW is about seeing to it that, across the nation, emerging talents gets a shot at exposure. Along with what you'd expect—music, film, performance—the organization supports up-and-comers in fashion, modeling, hair, makeup, and photography. For the rest of summer and into fall they've set up shop to do it once a month at the Fine Line in downtown Minneapolis. This Thursday, the exhibit is Expressions, featuring some truly fascinating imagery you otherwise might not come across, particularly in the mainstream. All of it local, hand-picked for the occasion. Dress code is not your usual club fare. So, go into your closet for glad-rags that qualify as cocktail attire. - Dwight Hobbes

TCDP TOP PICK | Minnesota Literacy Council Journeys Reading and Awards Ceremony

05/22/2013 - 6:00pm

TCDP TOP PICK: Though those "Pass It On" billboards generally seem pretty useless (nothing against Mia Hamm, but can we maybe get Seimone Augustus up there?), it's hard not to feel genuinely inspired by the one featuring the guy who learned to read at 70. That's the kind of magic the Minnesota Literacy Council makes happen every day, and on May 22 you're invited to see first-hand as the organization's adult learners present their work at The Loft Literary Center. - Jay Gabler
