Women on the homefront: Classic WWII posters on display at Minneapolis Central Library

It was a poster from the Kittleson Collection on exhibit in the Minneapolis Central Library Hosmer Collection that spurred my reflections. The World War II-era posters depicts a loving mom and daughter, their gentle exchange as they plant their Victory Garden, the little girl‘s optimism as they work together to support the War effort. Peaceful, full of life and hope.

Unbearable victimhood: MN for Marriage brings back the flaming lavender stormtroopers of love

During last fall's debate over the amendment to restrict the freedom to marry, one of the spokesters for Minnesota for Marriage (M4M) compared the tactics of Vote No supporters with Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime. M4M quickly repudiated the claim, but has revived the trope in news materials for April 7 church-based organizing.

Friday’s sunny skies and relatively warm temperatures made the annual Planned Parenthood Good Friday Solidarity Day easier for the several hundred people who attended. This was the first time the event, to support abortion rights, birth control and women’s health, was held at the new Planned Parenthood flagship health center in St. Paul.

Lilly Ledbetter: "One person can start a battle"

Back in 1998, after working as a manager at Goodyear Rubber for 19 years, Lilly Ledbetter got an anonymous note in her mailbox. The note told her how much her three fellow managers — all male — were paid. They were paid 40 percent more than she was. After her shift, she went home and told her husband and he drove her to the EEOC office to file a discrimination charge, starting on a path that led, eventually, to the U.S. Supreme Court and to the White House.

Same-sex marriage and the Supremes: What will the Court do now?

So after two days of arguments before the Supreme Court, what are the prospects for legalization of same-sex marriage across the United States if not in Minnesota? The best guess right now is that there are not five votes to strike down all bans on same-sex marriage across the country but that instead potential inaction by the Supreme Court may be one of the best things to happen for those who support the right of gays and lesbians to wed.
