Multiparty coalition backing Minnesota same-sex marriage

With less than six weeks left in Minnesota's legislative session, supporters of same-sex marriage are forming a coalition to make such marriages legal in the state. On Wednesday, Ken Martin, the chair of Minnesota's Democratic Farmer Labor Party, joined Independence Party Executive Committee member Matt Lewis, Former Green Party Chair Cam Gordon and Libertarian Party Chair Bob Odden to call on lawmakers to bring the issue to a vote in the House and the Senate.

Representative proposes state recognition of civil unions

Calling the current bill to allow for same gender marriages divisive, Rep. Tim Kelly (R-Red Wing) will be introducing a bill Thursday that would allow civil unions to be treated in state statute the same as marriage.

Hmong 18 Clan Council forum focuses on violence in Hmong community

The Hmong 18 Clan Council held an open community forum on Tuesday, April 8 to address recent incidents of violence that have alarmed the Hmong community. The forum, conducted in both Hmong and English, was attended by members of the St. Paul Police Department, the Sheriff’s Department, and Senator Foung Hawj, who joined more than 75 members of the community at Hmong Village in St. Paul.

Even on the most blustery day, one can see bicyclists braving the icy roads here in Minnesota. Commuters and recreationalists alike take to the streets, making the Twin Cities one of the top bike regions in the country. The city of Minneapolis was second only to Portland, OR as the most bike-friendly city in the nation, as deemed by Bicycle Magazine in 2012. Not only are the Twin Cities competitive on a national level, but continue to impress locally with ever-increasing cycling statistics. In the past five years, Bike Walk TC has noted a bicycle traffic increase of 51% in the metro area.

We treasure the chance to sit and exchange our stories and have our say, at least with each other. What goes unspoken is that it’s a world where we do not always feel we get to have that.

Tackling sexual health issues for bicultural girls

Growing up as a teen in a small town in Wisconsin, Kaonou Hang was taught that it was inappropriate for a proper Hmong girl to talk about sexual health issues – whether it was about boyfriends and sex, her monthly periods or simply using words for the female anatomy. This just wasn’t done in her culture and therefore relied on her friends’ knowledge to understand the changes that were occurring in her body as she grew into adulthood.
