North Minneapolis Earth Day celebration focuses on environmental justice, impact on communities of color

On Saturday, April 27, Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota (EJAM) and the Minneapolis chapter of the Sierra Club Environmental Justice Program played host to an Earth Day Celebration, held at the Kwanzaa Community Church in North Minneapolis. The event was an opportunity for the community to hear about how the treatment of the environment has an impact on their daily lives while enjoying some food, entertainment, and being in each other’s company.

South High's Green Tigers host environmental conference

On Thursday, March 21st, students from South High School’s Green Tigers environmental group collaborated with members Alexis Boxer and Tim Harlan-Marks of the Sierra Club to raise awareness about the Keystone XL pipeline. The 60 students who came learned about the difference between sustainable and non-sustainable energy. At the end, the students were given postcards to write President Obama about what needs to change in order for a sustainable future.

Lonesome Valley: Night Flight's a lovely sight

In the earliest part of spring, when it may not feel too spring-like at all, you might step outside one night and hear it—a faint, mournful hooting, far overhead. If you look up then, and the skies are clear, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this spring phenomenon: a wavering white line of birds moving across the night sky, glinting in the moonlight. These are whistling swans, headed from their winter home on the East coast to their nesting grounds in the arctic.

Open veins of Big Stone County, Minnesota; or, the idea of order in Ortonville

In a recent radio interview broadcast by KDIO, Ortonville mayor Steve Berkner inveighed against "intimidation tactics" that had supposedly by used by "special interest" opponents of the Strata Mining Corporation's plan to open a granite quarry in a cow pasture that contains some of Big Stone County's namesake granite outcroppings.

Trying not to stick my head in the sand

After walking two miles behind a “Stop Frac Sand” banner, we arrived at the Port of Winona where 18-wheel trucks were unloading their cargoes of silica frac sand on to barges in the Mississippi River to be shipped to natural gas fracking operations in Texas or other locations. A second group of friends walked over three miles to another Winona, MN site where already-mined frac sand was being washed before loaded on to the trucks that were arrive at the port. With the support of dozens of other friends, 35 of us were arrested on trespass charges as we nonviolently blocked the trucks this morning in what may have been the largest protest to date against fracking.
