Oscar winning actor John C. Reilly will be touching down in Minneapolis on June 15 to perform at the Woman’s Club Assembly Theater for an intimate evening of musical entertainment. With the help of some of his friends, the artist, who goes by John Reilly when he’s with his band, will deliver a night of vintage music ranging from bluegrass to country to folk and beyond.

St. George's Middle Eastern Festival 2013

Camel rides. Middle Eastern music and dancing. THEATER REVIEW | "Urinetown" at the Jungle Theater: An exuberant musical about micturition

If I had to describe the production of Urinetown at the Jungle Theater in a single word, it would be “exuberance.”  John Command directs an energetic and talented group of singers and dancers to tell the tale of a world where water is scarce and the ability to relieve oneself is limited by the size of one’s pocketbook. Micturition seems like an unlikely topic for a rousing musical, but this show radiates exuberance and provides for a very entertaining evening.

THEATER REVIEW | "War Horse" comes to life at the Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre, and downtown for that matter, were buzzing with anticipation for the opening night of War Horse on Wednesday, June 12. I had a hunch that Steven Spielberg’s 2011 movie adaptation played a part in the giddy turnout. While that may have been the case for some, myself included, it was clear from overheard conversations that the play is a big deal in and of itself. Whatever the case, War Horse is worthy of the hype.

Somewhere near the end of Man of Steel, my girlfriend leaned over and whispered to me, "I can't believe this movie isn't over yet." Neither could I—especially given that it hadn't even really started yet.

Minnesota filmmaker Karl Jacob makes a splash in L.A. with "Pollywogs"

The Los Angeles Film Festival (LAFF) starts this Thursday, June 13; while I won't be out in Los Angeles covering the festival, there is reason for the Twin Cities film community to be interested in the festival. Minnesota-born filmmaker/actor Karl Jacob will have his directional debut, Pollywogs, competing in the Narrative Competition at LAFF, with Friday's world premiere screening already sold out.
