St. Paul

Thomas-Dale—frequently referred to as Frogtown—is Saint Paul’s most diverse neighborhood. This diversity is reflected not only in our residents who come from every corner of the globe, but in the wonderful shops, restaurants, and services that you will also find here. University Avenue is the major commercial center in the neighborhood, home to about 100 Asian-owned businesses and many others—and it is served by high-frequency and express buses and the forthcoming Central Corridor LRT line. Our modestly-priced homes, strong sense of community, active and engaged residents, and proximity to the State Capital, downtown, and I-94 make Thomas-Dale a great place to call home.

COMMUNITY VOICES | Open Saint Paul: What concerns do you have regarding the safety or comfort of walking, biking, or driving on Marshall Avenue? What opportunities do you see for improvement?

The City of Saint Paul has begun a community-based study to explore opportunities to improve safety and comfort along Marshall Avenue between Snelling Avenue and John Ireland Boulevard. This project builds off the 2010 Bike Walk Central Corridor Action Plan that identified Marshall Avenue as a bicycle alternative to University Avenue, as well as community efforts to improve Marshall Avenue over the last 15 years. This study may identify additional minor improvements west of Snelling Avenue, but will primarily seek to identify appropriate improvements east of Snelling Avenue. The City Public Works department has requested funding through the CIB process to implement improvements identified through this study.

No matter the weather, on Saturday, April 20, Saint Paul’s Saint Anthony Park neighborhood will celebrate all things green. SAP is considering becoming a “Transition Town” with a festival -- including kids’ activities, school projects, music, short films, and learning opportunities. A Transition Town is a community that understands that it must create less a fossil-fueled, energy-intensive way of life and at the same time a more stable, satisfying, locally-oriented one. Several working interest groups have already started the journey, and Saturday they will hold an expo of new initiatives, inviting discussion and participation.

THEATER REVIEW | "Girl Group": Theatre Unbound's smart, funny musical treat

Amanda Kay Thomm, Laura Mahler, Becka Linder, and Katia Cardenas in Girl Group.

Just to be honest and up-front, the playwright Carol Critchley is a friend of mine. Reviewing the work of your friends can be dicey. But I needn’t have worried. One of the many reasons Carol is a friend is that she is one of the funniest writers I know. Which is why I was excited to hear that Theatre Unbound was offering up the world premiere of Carol Critchley’s new play Girl Group. Because we don’t get to laugh enough, and we don’t get to see nearly enough of Carol’s work on stage.

Frogtown's Daily Diner dishes up meatloaf and mashed potatoes, with dignity and sobriety on the side

I still remember the days when I used to get excited about the opening of new restaurants serving exotic dishes like pho and pad Thai. But nowadays, you can find pho and pad Thai on almost every block of St. Paul's University Avenue, and my definition of new and exciting has shifted. What's new and exciting these days is the Daily Diner, which opened Monday at University and Dale in Frogtown.
