When you pick up a ticket for a play entitled My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding (currently in production at the Minnesota Jewish Theatre), you sort of know what you're signing up for as an audience member. However, when I first got the assignment to review the show, I didn't notice that it was also a musical. Thrilling, gravity-defying acrobatics and dazzling dance routines were how Southeast Minneapolis resident Erdenechimeg "Chimgee" Haltarhuu sought escape from domestic violence in Mongolia.  

Haltarhuu, 45, was born in Mongolia, a country where domestic violence is commonplace and resources for survivors are scarce. Her late husband beat her so severely her jaw shattered.MORE »

March puts focus on fair global economy

While the recession, health care and the war in Afghanistan dominate the headlines, Minnesotans gathered Saturday to put the focus on the movement for a fair and just global economy. Carrying signs and banners that read "Fair Trade Now!" more than 100 people crossed the Ford Bridge between Minneapolis and St. Paul and marched to a rally at the United Auto Workers Local 879 hall. They called on Congress to pass the TRADE Act, legislation that would require trade agreements to protect workers, the environment, consumers and others.  MORE »
