MUSIC REVIEW | Brother Ali records the second episode of MN Original and TPT’s " The Lowertown Line"

Last night I attended the taping of MN Original and TPT’s new series The Lowertown Line, a program that features in-studio concerts and interviews with local musicians. Dessa is the host, although her portion of the program had been recorded earlier, so we didn’t see her last night. Last night’s featured artist was Brother Ali. Apparently tickets for the event were gone within half an hour. (Tickets were free and announced via MN Original’s Facebook page.)

"Aberration of Starlight": Playwright Walter A. Davis gets to the heart of Emily Dickinson

There aren't a great many male playwrights who do well creating female characters of any dimension. In fact, the list of famous names is fairly short. After William Inge, Tennessee Williams, and August Wilson you have to scratch your head pretty hard to come up with more. Which makes it all the more fascinating that accomplished author Walter A. Davis (The Holocaust Memorial: A Play About Hiroshima, Trim: The Tiger Woods Story) is bringing his work back to the Twin Cities with the premiere of Aberration of Starlight: A Play About Emily Dickinson.

THEATER REVIEW | "Girl Group": Theatre Unbound's smart, funny musical treat

Amanda Kay Thomm, Laura Mahler, Becka Linder, and Katia Cardenas in Girl Group.

Just to be honest and up-front, the playwright Carol Critchley is a friend of mine. Reviewing the work of your friends can be dicey. But I needn’t have worried. One of the many reasons Carol is a friend is that she is one of the funniest writers I know. Which is why I was excited to hear that Theatre Unbound was offering up the world premiere of Carol Critchley’s new play Girl Group. Because we don’t get to laugh enough, and we don’t get to see nearly enough of Carol’s work on stage.

Please let us know what type of community events you would like to see at the Lowertown Ballpark.

Saint Paul's Nice Ride failure shows need for downtown bike lanes

I saw my first NiceRider this week, an Asian student crossing the Wasington Avenue bridge on the University of Minnesota campus. It seems that, barring massive snowstorms forcing the bright green bikes to scuttle back to their hibernation caves, the Nice Ride season is upon us. They’re even expanding again, adding 24 new stations along the river and in South Minneapolis.

Construction in St. Paul: West Side Flats

Lost of construction going on. The land is on the river near the Wabasha bridge and was once going to be the site of a large development call "Bridges of Saint Paul" that was going to be condos and restaurants and I think even a theater.

REVIEW | Paula Poundstone and Robyn Hitchcock open MPR's "Wits" season in style

Courtesy Paula Poundstone

Wits is a now-weekly MPR radio program. It airs live from the Fitzgerald Theater on Friday nights this season (March 15-June 14). If you can't swing a spring break to a warm climate this year, tickets to this gig would be a great alternative getaway. (Heads up, though, that some events this season are already sold out.)

Lowertown's parking challenge

This map sparked a few disparaging tweets, including a small #twitterwar with a City Council member. As it turns out, people get riled up about parking. It is as if they feel they are entitled to parking and the benefits thereafter.
