MUSIC REVIEW | Cat Power at Mill City Nights: High maintenance, but worth the effort

I've often said that live music is the hardest type of art to write about, because so many elements of a concert follow the same script from artist to artist and show to show: play your songs, introduce the band, thank the audience, play an encore. On October 30, though, the mercurial singer-songwriter who performs as Cat Power played a strange and wonderful show at Mill City Nights that reminded me why some journalists spend their careers covering live music—and why it gives them ulcers.

MUSIC REVIEW | Even under distress, POS gets down at First Avenue

Photos by Logan Adams

The show Friday, October 26 featured five acts, but there was no question the entire night was all about headliner POS. Billed as an album release for his latest full-length, We Don’t Even Live Here, First Avenue was packed to the coat check by a sold-out crowd lubricated with sweat and Surly—a crowd ready to get down.

Taxi or techie? Uber cars, popular but controversial, debut in Twin Cities

Photos of Uber Minneapolis launch party via Uber on Facebook

In October, Uber, an app-based car service that has been all the rage in cities across the country and internationally, hit the Twin Cities, much to the delight of local customers who love the convenience of the app as well as the slick ride that the Uber limos provide. "Beauty and the Beast" musical: Spectacular, spectacular!

As I enter the auditorium of the historic Orpheum Theatre, I am immediately struck by the grandeur of it all. Crystal chandelier, red carpet, ornately gilded golden accents, and (of course) the velvet seats. I am brought back to my first experience here - seeing Phantom of the Opera in 2009. As a young girl who had yet to discover her passion for theater, the ballgowns, live orchestra, and drama had me experiencing the first bits of 'theater magic' - was I actually transported to 19th century France?

Tuesday night was reminiscent of that May night three years ago, and was no exception to the 'theater magic'. Packed to the brim with excited Disney-loving parents, grandparents, and wide-eyed children (some of whom were dressed in appropriate Belle-esque gowns), as the lights went down for the first time and the beautifully painted set lit up, the special spell was cast over the spectators.
