Brown Ink

Brown Ink is the blog of Lolla Mohammed Nur, a college student who aspires to be a journalist, post-colonial development critic, and human rights activist. I study journalism, political science and African studies at the University of Minnesota and also work as a peer adviser at the Community Service Learning Center there.

I speak five languages (to varying degrees of fluency), partly because I’ve been a globetrotter since birth. Although born and mostly raised in Saudi Arabia, I’ve visited and lived in four continents (at least eight countries). I now reside in Saint Paul, Minnesota and haven’t traveled for two years (highly unusual for me)! Despite all my previous travels, my heart, soul and conscience will always be deeply rooted in Ethiopia and Eritrea: my homelands and the cradles of humanity itself.

If it’s not already obvious, besides my passion for human and civil rights, social activism, and African development, I’m fiercely passionate about media justice: minority media self-empowerment, control, and access; accurate media representations of minorities; and providing a voice for the oppressed or marginalized.

A necessary component of attaining justice and establishing human rights is the SELF-empowerment of “brown,” minority, and other marginalized and oppressed peoples so that they may independently represent, speak for, and act on behalf of themselves – in media, writing, academia, activism, public and political discourse, foreign policy, development, international trade and economic relations, basically everything.

Well, that’s my (lofty) philosophy at least.
