The Clinton campaign as Shakespearean Tragedy

by Demi Miller, Minnesota Progressive Caucus, 6/4/08 • As I’ve been following this campaign it has struck me that so much of how these events unfold is not in our complete control. Concepts that the writers of Greek Tragedy understood – the role of Fate, the power of pride and hubris, the blindness that ambition can sometimes create in us, the capriciousness of the timing of crucial events – all can influence outcomes in unpredictable ways.

Green wave to come

by Rachel Dykoski, 6/4/08 • Fourteen hours have passed since I struggled home from the most amazing rally. After hearing Sen. Barack Obama at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul last night, my heart is still full of hope.

So many of us are committed to the ideals of the Democratic party. Every vote must count because everybody matters, and hearing his speech yesterday made me believe it. “We are the future we’ve been waiting for,” is not some blithe accolade or turn of phrase. It’s an axiom for a movement – a green wave of opportunity in which we all can play a role.

Passion and bitterness without circumspection

by Eric Pusey, 5/10/08 • Y’all probably notice that I don’t write about the Presidential race much at all. First because my goal is to write about MN politics. Second cuz I’m a wonk and if I were to start, it’d be all I’d write about … ever … its a wee bit complex as you all know. Third, there are MORE than enough people covering it … from the gasbag, lying, egotistical pundits to sites like Daily Kos, Crooks and Liars, firedoglake and Huffington Post to thousands of blogs across the country.

Choose your school

Saturday is School Choice Day in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. If you’re the parent of a student, you have the opportunity to send your child to either the public school in your neighborhood or a magnet school. You also have the opportunity to send your child to a charter or a private school. Both school districts, and metro-area charter schools, are planning one-stop information fairs where, they say, you can find out all you need to know about schools where you might want to send your child. Weekend What's What 1/8-1/11: Hunt and gather

Way to bounce back! The Twin Cities seem to have easily shaken off their holiday lethargy just in time for a pretty rockin’ weekend. Art exhibits, which have been on holiday hiatus as of late, are back in full effect; while rock shows and dance parties continue to ignite flames all over town. Our suggestion? Go out on the prowl! Meet some new people, see some new sights, and experience some fresh excitement. It is 2009 after all (an excuse we’ll be using throughout January, if not February). MORE »
