Minnesota Fringe Festival 2012: "Rip" at Minneapolis Theatre Garage

I've seen some pretty good stuff so far during the first half of the Fringe. But Rip is one of those gems that makes me so dang excited about the 11-day festival (which at times has given me a little bit of stress ... there's just so much to see and fit in!) The acting is solid. The storytelling is unique. The soundtrack is amazing. A mix of rock 'n roll and blue grass? Yes, please. I recognized band and cast member David Darrow from Theater Latte Da's Spring Awakening, who impressed me then too.

Set in the 1950s, Rip is a tells the story of a man who quits his mundane job on a whim and falls asleep after escaping his home life, only to wake up years later in the same place but different time. The plot follows the well-known legend of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving, only in a different time of American history. It's such a great legend, and I wish Dovetail Theatre had more than an hour to perform. There's more opportunity for the end of the play to make it seem more complete and fulfilling.
