ST. PAUL NOTES | Will tournaments bring winter to St. Paul?

Every year, St. Paul braces for the double onslaught of high school sports tournaments and the season's final blast of snowstorms. This year, we haven't seen much winter, but the tournaments start Wednesday, with GIrls' Hockey at the Xcel Center (and the Mariucci Arena). Is it just a coincidence that the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory? 

I think not. 

While the wimpy amount of snow forecast hardly lives up to tournament expectations, there's still a month before winter officially ends. And in the meantime, the National Weather Service is helping us to stay alarmed, with its all-caps treatment of winter in Minnesota:

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM CST TUESDAY...

* TIMING...A MIXTURE OF SNOW AND RAIN WILL BE SEEN THIS AFTERNOON BEFORE PRECIPITATION QUICKLY CHANGES OVER TO ALL SNOW LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND LASTS THROUGH MUCH OF THE NIGHT.

* MAIN IMPACT...2 TO 4 INCHES OF SNOW.

* OTHER IMPACTS...LESS TRAVELED ROADS SHOULD SEE SLUSHY SNOW ACCUMULATIONS THIS EVENING.

 

Meanwhile, if you'd like to schedule your tournament viewing (or your tournament avoidance of downtown St. Paul parking snarls), the PiPress has a complete listing, with inside info on everything from Wednesday's start through the rest of hockey and wrestling and swimming to the grand finale Boy's Basketball tournament on March 21-24, marking the official end of winter.
