Spring gardening fever: Friends School plant sale
Submitted by Grace Kelly, 4/23/08 • MN Blue • Just like the Girl Scout Cookies sale tops all other cookie sales, so does the Friends School Plant Sale top all other plant sales. Yes, this is a typical shopping cart of what people use to stack plants being purchased at the Friends School Plant Sale. Why?
High costs of higher education
by Justine Biggott, 4/4/08 • Even more college students today are living off of vending machines and microwave ramen noodles. It’s always been a well known fact that unless you were downright rich you would be poor as a petunia through and well after college. And how horrifying it is to hear that tuition was up 4.1% last year; with a likely trend to continue this year? Why did it only cost 655 dollars in 1977 and 6,185 in 2007 to go to a public college?
Power 2 Change
As Earth Day arrives on April 22, many people are launching into new projects to help save the planet from global warming. The Sierra Club has started their Power 2 Change, a national clean energy advocacy campaign to educate the public about what is at stake in the 2008 elections by highlighting contrasting views of clean energy and highlighting different programs. Nine states, including Minnesota, are participating in this five-week campaign, which started March 26.
Protect the arts and environment
by Jenny Stiner, 4/11/08 • In 2003, thirty-two percent of arts funding was lost in a State deficit. Every time funding is cut the environment and arts are left with the least amount which is minimal. I found this very interesting because as a citizen I feel that the environment is a huge part of our daily life. There is a constitutional amendment which has been brought before the House and the Senate. This decision will now leave the funding up to the voters. This is great because we will finally be able to decide if we want our taxes raised.
