Revealing images at SlutWalk Minneapolis

October 1, 2011 along the Mississippi riverfront in downtown Minneapolis, a gorgeous day, a salient message. (Photo essay)

Don't get raped -----> Don't rape

Gary,We use that terminology
Gary,
We use that terminology because the word slut is what sparked the SlutWalk movement. A police officer told women that they wouldn't get raped if they didn't dress like sluts. Because of the controversial nature of the movement, SlutWalk has received a lot more media coverage then other anti-violence marches. We hold a Take Back the Night event almost every year in the Twin Cities and it hasn't garnered this much media attention, at least not in the last few years when I've attended it. And you're wrong about only sociopaths and mentally ill people raping others. I volunteer at a sexual assautl center and can tell you that's it's everyday people, with misinformation and warped notions about what consent is and how to treat people respectfully, that make up the majority of rapists.
Why use that terminology?
Why use that terminology?
Mr. Helm, for the answer to your question, read the transcript of the next rape trial in your area. Chances are, the victim's behavior, clothing, or character will be put on trial, something that never happens in, say, a robbery case. ("He was asking to be robbed! He looked rich! And he'd given away money loads of times!")
So why use the term "slut"? It's called irony: women who know they'llbe called sluts if a man rapes them pointing out how sick and absurd that is. Sounds like you agree, so let's not freak out about tactics, okay? Next time, make a sign that says "rape is sociopathic" and join your sisters.
Why, Gary?
Because people like you would simply ignore a walk against rape without a catchy, controversial name. Would you be out supporting it if it were the "anti-rape walk"? Or would you just ignore it.
One of the signs really got to the point - "No one asked my rapist what he was wearing". Women are blamed for "asking for it" in sexual assault all the time - it's the first line of defense in most rape trials. Your very griping about "slutty clothing" is doing the rapist's lawyer's job... blaming the victim.
Women have a right to be sexual beings without fear of assault. Whether you like it or not.
Values? Huh?
What on earth does that have to do with it? Christians rape. Those who publicly espouse "traditional values" rape. Hell, we all know that PRIESTS rape! Reread those signs, learn more about the origins about the walk, and think twice before making snap political judgments.
thanks
nice job of telling the story in pictures
Slut Walk
Slut Walk? Why use that terminology? Is it your personal hatred of traditional values and Christianity? Just trying to get attention? No one but sociopathic and/or mentally ill would do such a thing as rape. A slut walk in slutty clothing is the wrong approach. clean it up and be more mature about this very good cause of standing up to rape and sexual abuse.
Seriously? How do you not get
Seriously? How do you not get it?
Point of it: women who are raped are usually accused of being sluts. Therefore, calling it "slut walk" is to show that it doesn't matter what you wear/look like/etc - rape is rape.
But, sure. Make it about Christianity. Whatever.
you're missing the point
You're missing the point. Yes of course the "slutty" clothing is meant to draw attention to this issue, as is the name. What a woman wears is not an excuse for the lack of control on the part of the rapist. If we were to believe that, we would all be wearing burkas.
As far as the label "slut", can you think of a similar label aimed at men?
