Kites on thin ice at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis? Sorry — not this year

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board had already determined to reschedule the Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival to the backup date of January 21, 2012, hoping that there would be sufficient low temperatures over the next week for Lake Harriet will again be covered in color with kites, kids, and kids of older years.
On Monday, I was contacted by one of the sponsors, the East Harriet Neighborhood Association; "After much consideration, the DNR and Minneapolis Parks decided the ice on Lake Harriet will not be at a sufficient thickness by Saturday."
Here are some scenes from about a year ago, when the ice was thick but the wind was a little thin.
