Construction images of the Sabo Bridge, 2007

During the summer of 2007 I became enmeshed with photographing a mural that was being painted on the side of Freewheel Bicycle in the West Bank area of Minneapolis. As I was traveling the Greenway to and from the West Bank I crossed Hiawatha Avenue at 28th Street and saw the installation / construction of the Martin Olav Sabo Bridge. It was a marvelous photographic project, which conveniently coincided with the mural project.

I very much relish the Sabo Bridge. I understand the argument that it was an expensive undertaking and that the funds may have been better employed more practically in other measures. But I see the bridge as a bit of poetry, and I would not want a world that doesn't sing. I collected 777 images of the bridge building process that summer, and the bridge's Official Opening night. Here is a smattering of the poem being formed.
