Health care and tomatoes in Canada

August 18, 2009
by Alan Wilfahrt | August 10, 2009 • Caring for the children is a little different in Canada. Jim is married to a niece of mine. Anne delivered their first progeny, Henry James, last week. I suggested to Jim that I hoped to see images of the trappings of parenthood along with the usual mug shoots. Jim had one ready; They will be using cloth diapers and so they had pre-washed these shown hanging on the line. The metadata on the image he sent, stated that it was taken on 7/28/2009 4:58 PM. But check out the wimpy tomato plants! I need to mention that Jim, Anne and Henry live in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Yup, Canada. Although that should be no excuse really. Here is a shot of good American tomatoes, shot yesterday out at my sister-in-law's in Rosemount MN, in the good old USA. You can see how much better American tomatoes are, right? What? You say Canadian's are (North) Americans too! Hey as Randy Newman sings in Political Science,
And Canada's too cold.
And South America stole our name.
Let's drop the big one; there'll be no one left to blame us.

I mean, like, who wants single payer health care like Canada. Anne only gets something like a year's of maternity leave, with 90% of her pay for some months, and 40% for the balance, with a guarantee of the job after the maternity leave. I only have some of the details from hearsay from my siblings, but the crux of it is that the health care in Canada is good. Canada tends to nurture their young. The conservatives are trying to scare people again. These are the same factions that were proposing that we privatize Social Security. Have you checked the value of your 401K's lately? They supported the Bush Tax Cuts that went to the individuals who are in the economic salary bracket of the executives on Wall Street, who cannot subsist on their extraordinary monetary salaries alone, but need to have fantastic bonuses as well, in order to do their jobs. Yes they need Tax Cuts, the poor souls, while they fight the raise of minimum wages (not a living wage, but minimum) And they certainly need relief from the Inheritance Tax (or as the conservatives have rephrased it Death Tax). And the conservatives kept pushing for and obtained de-regulation everywhere they could. The currant recession is largely attributed to misdeeds of unregulated financial constructs. The free-hand of the market place was busy stealing all it could get. And as to our AMERICAN choice in Health Care, how many really have a choice when coverage is decided by the company that does the employing. The choice of doctors and services is usually limited by those of the insurance program selected, yet the conservatives decry how a single payer program would limit us all. And the Insurance Companies are able to refuse coverage, as they determine. And why should employers be burdened with having to manage Health Care insurance issues? I agree with the conservatives that excess government spending needs to be checked, but let us start with the military. All of a sudden the conservatives are concerned with budgetary deficits. But when we invade a country or two money is no object. Let's drop the big one! OK, some of the old charades may be wearing thin, so let us try this. Obviously Henry James is not going to be an American president, at least of the United States, but maybe enough people can be duped into birth origin falsehoods. Hey, Weapons of Mass Destruction worked! Unfortunately the conservatives have not gone away. We all need to be witness to the truth and debunk the false assertions they propagate. We owe it to the children.
