"Standing on the Shoulders of Giants"

February 18, 2009
by Center for Democracy and Citizenship • Last week we wrote about a dozen young people from Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center, Minn., who are using Public Achievement in a program at Hope Community to understand power and make collective change.
By the People is a weblog on civic engagement produced by the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs of the University of Minnesota.
As part of their work and learning, they partnered with SPNN to create a documentary about a group of African American students at the University of Minnesota (U of M) who, in 1969, staged a sit-in to demand that the university improve the campus climate - and access - for minorities. In this film, the teens place an event organized by students in Minnesota 40 years ago in the context of an ongoing nationwide movement for justice and equality.

Blogs published in the Daily Planet come from our blog partners or from individuals who post blogs on the Daily Planet. We moderate, but do not edit, blogs, and publish all those that meet minimal standards. We choose about five blogs per day to feature in the newsletter and on the front page. More on blogs and directions for setting up your own blog here. The opinions expressed in the Free Speech Zone and Neighborhood Notes, as well as the opinions of bloggers, are their own and not necessarily the opinion of the TC Daily Planet.
