Daily Planet arts coverage: More timely than ever

by Jay Gabler, Arts Editor • TC Daily Planet • 11/10/08 • Starting this week, you’ll notice a welcome change in our arts coverage—a change that will help us keep you right on top of the latest local goings-on.

Arts Orbit is a multisource blog about the local arts scene, featuring both original contributions by Daily Planet writers and entries reprinted from partner blogs and online publications. Follow ArtsOrbit on Twitter and subscribe to the weekly arts newsletter for the latest scoop.

Those of you who subscribe to our daily newsletter have become used to seeing most of our arts coverage clustered in three special sections each week: Thursday’s “Views and Reviews” section, Friday’s food and dining section, and Sunday’s book section. This system has outlived its usefulness as our arts coverage has grown—the final installment of “Views and Reviews” in last Thursday’s newsletter featured no fewer than ten articles. With this quantity (and quality) of coverage, it just doesn’t make sense to hold all our articles to deliver in an overflowing once-weekly batch. Henceforth, we’re scrapping the three special sections so we can get the news to you as soon as it happens: for example, in tonight’s newsletter you’ll find Jon Behm’s review of Nimbus Theatre Company’s just-opened Death and the Maiden. Last night, my take on the Guthrie’s Shadowlands went out in the newsletter only hours after the curtain dropped on the press performance.

We’re also changing the style of our headlines to make it easier to identify our arts coverage—views and reviews on BOOKS, DINING, MOVIES, MUSIC, THEATER, and VISUAL ARTS are now identified with headings in capital letters, the convention we follow for other special areas of coverage like VOICES, NEWS YOU CAN USE, and THINGS PEOPLE SAY.

This is just the latest in a series of initiatives to help you access our growing arts coverage in the manner that’s most convenient for you. Do you know that Katy Perry is coming to First Avenue in March? You do know, if you’re following ArtsOrbit on Twitter. Know what the sexiest local music is? You do know, if you subscribe to our weekly arts newsletter. With the Twin Cities ramping up for a holiday season full of new plays, new music, new exhibits, and more, you’ll want to keep your antennae tuned for the latest and greatest—and there’s no better place to do that than right here at tcdailyplanet.net.

Choose your school

Saturday is School Choice Day in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. If you’re the parent of a student, you have the opportunity to send your child to either the public school in your neighborhood or a magnet school. You also have the opportunity to send your child to a charter or a private school. Both school districts, and metro-area charter schools, are planning one-stop information fairs where, they say, you can find out all you need to know about schools where you might want to send your child. Weekend What's What 1/8-1/11: Hunt and gather

Way to bounce back! The Twin Cities seem to have easily shaken off their holiday lethargy just in time for a pretty rockin’ weekend. Art exhibits, which have been on holiday hiatus as of late, are back in full effect; while rock shows and dance parties continue to ignite flames all over town. Our suggestion? Go out on the prowl! Meet some new people, see some new sights, and experience some fresh excitement. It is 2009 after all (an excuse we’ll be using throughout January, if not February). MORE »
