Vandalia Street gets good wood
by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet • 10/2/08 • You know the Twin Cities have a great theater scene. You know that our bands are the coolest. You may even know that we have an exceptional number of exceptional dance companies. But did you know that the metro area is a national hub of woodcraft?
Arts Orbit is a multisource blog about the local arts scene, featuring both original contributions by Daily Planet writers and entries reprinted from partner blogs and online publications.
It’s true. St. Paul is home to the American Association of Woodturners and its associated gallery, which exhibits astonishingly fine work by artists from around the country. This weekend, the Loading Dock Gallery—at 558 Vandalia Street, just north of I-94 in the Capital City’s St. Anthony neighborhood—will be temporary home to work by three of the Twin Cities’ top furniture makers: Scott McGlasson, Thomas Oliphant, and Duff Thury. The show will be open on Friday, October 3 from 5-9 p.m.; and on Saturday the 4th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This is woodcraft like you may have never seen it. Thury’s work in particular is blissfully postmodern—see his This is Not a Chair, above, and his Itchy Chair and Table, at left—but built to old-fashioned standards. You’ll pay more for this work than for, say, STEFAN or even NORVALD, but in these troubled financial times, there’s something reassuring about making an investment you can sit on.
