Burn, baby, burn!

Having lived in New England for 14 years, my one great regret is that I never saw WaterFire. All credit to the civic booster who came up with the idea of attracting tourists to Rhode Island by filling the rivers of Providence with dozens of flaming pyres while playing avant-garde music. "And we'll call it...WaterFire!" Even the Web site crackles.

As far as I know, there's nothing quite like it in the upper Midwest, but we do have Art + Fire. This Saturday in Stockholm, Wisconsin, artists Stanton Sears and Andrea Myklebust will build a wooden Fire Castle. And then they'll burn it. And not only can you watch, you can help! (With the building, not the burning.) Just for good measure, there will also be fire dancing. It's like a little Midwestern Burning Man Festival—but with less hassle and less nudity. Well, probably.
