If we were all Lego guys

by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet • August 22, 2008 •

Yes, that is the cast of The Royal Tenenbaums portrayed as Lego figures. Cute, right? Of course, but not just cute—it’s art! Specifically, it’s the art of Plasticgod, an “internationally known Los Angeles resident” who styles himself “your 21st century Warhol.”

Arts Orbit is a multisource blog about the local arts scene, featuring both original contributions by Daily Planet writers and entries reprinted from partner blogs and online publications.

It’s a reasonable comparison: Like Warhol, Plasticgod conspicuously enjoys hob-nobbing with people you’ve heard of. His Web site lists several dozen “notable celebrities owning Plasticgod work.” (Those owning Legolike portraits of themselves include Bruce Willis, Paul McCartney, and Jamie Foxx.) He’s also prolific: just recently he’s completed plasticized pictures of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Indiana Jones, the Sex and the City cast, Rihanna, Kanye West, Donna Summer, and Barack Obama. And he enjoys turning his pop-art eye on art-world darlings…recognize this guy? (If not, you’re among the 99% of people who chose not to sit through a multi-hour film about the descent of testicles.)

What’s missing is the Warholian edge of weirdness—an omission not made by Plasticgod’s fellow commercially-minded neo-Warhol Takashi Murakami. But Murakami isn’t opening a solo show at the Soo Visual Arts Center. Plasticgod is: a display of “miniatures” in the appropriately miniature Toomer Gallery. I guess this means that to see the Duplo series, we’ll have to wait.

News you can use

Choose your school

Saturday is School Choice Day in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. If you’re the parent of a student, you have the opportunity to send your child to either the public school in your neighborhood or a magnet school. You also have the opportunity to send your child to a charter or a private school. Both school districts, and metro-area charter schools, are planning one-stop information fairs where, they say, you can find out all you need to know about schools where you might want to send your child. Weekend What's What 1/8-1/11: Hunt and gather

Way to bounce back! The Twin Cities seem to have easily shaken off their holiday lethargy just in time for a pretty rockin’ weekend. Art exhibits, which have been on holiday hiatus as of late, are back in full effect; while rock shows and dance parties continue to ignite flames all over town. Our suggestion? Go out on the prowl! Meet some new people, see some new sights, and experience some fresh excitement. It is 2009 after all (an excuse we’ll be using throughout January, if not February). MORE »
