The "Celeb"-ration is over

by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet • August 18, 2008 • The Brave New Workshop has been brave for half a century, but as any Kevin Costner character (including Kevin Costner) could tell you, there’s a thin line between bravery and folly. Many felt the Workshop crossed that line last summer by titling a show Rise of the Celebretards. “Using the word ‘retard’ in any reference,” wrote disability-rights activists, “legitimizes the oppression and ridicule many people experience on a daily basis.”

Arts Orbit is a multisource blog about the local arts scene, featuring both original contributions by Daily Planet writers and entries reprinted from partner blogs and online publications.

Saturday is School Choice Day in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. If you’re the parent of a student, you have the opportunity to send your child to either the public school in your neighborhood or a magnet school. You also have the opportunity to send your child to a charter or a private school. Both school districts, and metro-area charter schools, are planning one-stop information fairs where, they say, you can find out all you need to know about schools where you might want to send your child. Way to bounce back! The Twin Cities seem to have easily shaken off their holiday lethargy just in time for a pretty rockin’ weekend. Art exhibits, which have been on holiday hiatus as of late, are back in full effect; while rock shows and dance parties continue to ignite flames all over town. Our suggestion? Go out on the prowl!
