Cars, girlfriends, and apostrophes
by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet • June 23, 2008 • Maybe these things only occur to me because I’m an editor, but I just overheard a comment outside the Spyhouse that, I reflected, takes on quite different meanings depending on exactly where—or whether—an apostrophe is placed in the final word.
“The first time I saw you with that car, I thought it was one of your girlfriend’s.”
“The first time I saw you with that car, I thought it was one of your girlfriends’.”
“The first time I saw you with that car, I thought it was one of your girlfriends.”
