Landmark- Pilgrim Baptist Church

During the 1860's a number of African-Americans arrived in Minnesota. In 1863 a group of about 200 recently freed slaves came up the Mississippi by flatboat. The group was denied landing by at the St. Paul levee by hostile Irish dockworkers and was forced to unload at Ft. Snelling and walk to St. Paul. The men and women that stayed in St. Paul became the nucleus of the city's African-American community and founded the Pilgrim Baptist Church in 1866. The building now in use was built in 1928.
