Triangle Park Creative

Landmark- The Gateway District

The area know as the Gateway extends along the Mississippi River from 1st Ave. N to 5th Ave. S and 4th Street to 1st Street. From the 1870's to until the turn of the century the Gateway district was the heart of the city. As the city grew, the shopping district and businesses moved to Nicollet Ave. and construction in the Gateway district declined leaving mostly saloons and brothels. Prostitution flourished in the area with an indirect quasi-legal license system until 1910 when the mayor ordered the red light district shut down. Prostitution continued to thrive after the crackdown by shifting from the license system to payoffs directly to city officials. This attraction was added to the Daily Planet through a partnership with the Arise! Atlas (arisebookstore.org).
