"Director of communications at the Guthrie Theater."
Other than your job, what are your claims to fame?
"I'm the author of the novels Amnesia Nights and 14 Degrees Below Zero, as well as the upcoming Odd One Out, which is currently out with hat in hand, looking for a home—promising kid, I taught him all I could. I also used to be a theater critic, which the community is extremely kind about not holding against me. And I do things with cheeses and pasta that are gratifying to those in my proximity."
What's your relationship status?
"Complicatedly single."
Where are you most likely to be seen?
"Primarily at the Guthrie these days—Level 5 coffee and staff? Superb! Otherwise probably at The Beat Coffeehouse with my daughter, or Soho Cafe on Hennepin with my son. I go to SuperAmerica most mornings, and can be found in darkened theaters from time to time."
Where are you least likely to be seen?
"Places that are unpleasant. I mean, who has the time?"
With whom are you most likely to be seen?
"Depends on where you find me. Friends, luminaries, imaginary playmates..."
Where were you born?
"Columbus, Ohio, in a log cabin on the banks of the churning Olentangy River—more or less during the Summer of Love."
In what neighborhood do you live now?
"Uptown Minneapolis; I've been here for all of my 15+ years in Minneapolis. It's always felt like home."
What's your ride?
"I have a car with 110,000 miles on it that complains audibly whenever it's ridden. It's just going to have to take the long view. I drive cars until they are little more than an unrecognizable heap of auto parts."
What's the best way to start a conversation with you?
"I'm generally pretty unapproachable. No, really just introduce yourself and say something pleasant. Everyone needs to do more of that. I'll say something pleasant too."
